Ahead of the release of Star Wars: The Acolytethe lightsaber combat of the “duel of destinies” was shared. The Phantom Menace it served as inspiration for the type of battles we would see in this series.
Indeed, according to the actress of the series Dafne Keenthe creative team hoped to top Darth Maul’s lightsaber battle.
Keen said: “Yes, it was a very frequent conversation we had. It was so much – we want to top the Darth Maul fight, the most iconic fight, I think, in the Star Wars cinematic universe”.
He continued: “It’s an amazing fight and we were all so excited about the saber fights. There’s such skill and craft to this that it feels so OG Star Wars and it’s so impressive when you see it as a viewer.
Episode 5 of The Acolyte, titled “Night,” gave us our first big lightsaber battle. This is the battle the creative team teased, and now that we’ve seen it, I wanted to see what everyone thought.
Did this episode and the fight sequence meet your expectations? Have they overcome them? Or were they a disappointment? I’ve read a lot of things online and on social media and obviously there are still a lot of people still complaining about the series.
But I’ve also met many fans who say how incredible the brutal lightsaber battle sequence is and discuss the moments that were emotionally devastating for them.
Spoilers follow:
The death toll of the Jedi characters continues to rise in this recent episode with the death of Daphne KeenIt’s Jecki e Charlie BarnettYord Fandar, who are two of the main characters.
I can see how devastating this could be for those fans who are invested in the show and invested in the story. Then there are people, like me, who have had a hard time engaging with these characters and caring about them.
The writing and character development didn’t help me care about any of the characters in the series, so when they died I was indifferent.
As the battle and story unfold, we learn that Qimir (Manny Giacinto) is the main Sith villain of the series. This was something that many fans seemed to see coming from a mile away, so it wasn’t exactly a surprise.
But his insanely powerful Force powers are a surprise to many fans.
As far as lightsaber combat goes, the series has done some interesting and unique things that I’ve never seen in a game Star Wars project before, and I can appreciate what he was trying to do.
But, because I’m not emotionally invested in the story, it didn’t hit me as hard as the awesome lightsaber battles in other films. Star Wars projects like The Phantom Menace, The Clone WarsAND Rebelswhich I have included below for you to look at so you can compare.
While I love the “Duel of Fates” lightsaber battle, which is an all-time fan favorite and sets a standard, nothing captured the greatness of these types of fights like The Clone Wars Done.
You may also have noticed in the episode that during lightsaber fights the villain is repeatedly able to completely disable the weapons for a few moments before the power is restored.
How will he do it? Her helmet and parts of her dress are made of metallic Cortosis, introduced in the Legends stories. She causes the lightsabers to short out on impact. She is also resistant to blaster fire, which explains why Qimir was able to shrug off Osha’s blast.
Cortosis was first mentioned in the Star Wars Rebels novel A New Dawn and has appeared a few times since then, but this is the first time we’ve seen it in live-action.
This was an interesting element to introduce into the series and kept things interesting during the fight sequence.
So, what did you think of the lightsaber fight sequence? The Acolyte episode 5?
