The director of Nicolas Cage’s next twisted horror thriller Long legs, Osgood Perkinsrevealed that his next project will be an adaptation of Stephen King’S The monkeyand explains that it will be nothing of the sort Long legs.
In an interview with Bloody Disgusting’s Boo Crew Podcast, the director shared some details about the film, saying, “It’s going to feel more Misery OR Disturbing show OR Gremlins OR American werewolf. It couldn’t be LESS like Longlegs.”
The Monkey is part of King’s 1985 short story collection Skeleton Crew and the story follows two young brothers who one day find their missing father’s plate-banging toy monkey. It turns out that this monkey is cursed and the toy terrified his father as a child. Every time the monkey bangs on the cymbals, someone dies.
The director continued, “To me, if you’re going to make a movie about a toy monkey, you can take it seriously. But so much of King is fun and nostalgic.
“So we tried to make a movie that felt a little more like something from the late ’80s to ’90s.” For me, ideally, it’s the film that children and their parents want to go and see together.”
In another interview with EW, Perkins shared, “I wanted to embrace the humor of Stephen King. I wanted to be more on the side of Disturbing show AND Miseryand I wanted the movie to feel like a Stephen King movie to really honor the guy.
“I mean, is he the most significant writer… ever? In any genre, prolifically, just in terms of impact. Certainly for the horror genre, be it literary or cinematographic, there is no one who has contributed more. So it’s time to really honor the guy. I really made a movie that I hoped he would like.”
He added: “The Monkey is like Robert Zemeckis on ecstasy or something.” So it sounds like fun!
Movie stars Christian Convery (Sweetness, Cocaine bear) as Hal and Bill as children, and Teo Giacomo (The Lords, X-Men ’97) will play the twins as adults. The film is also the protagonist Tatiana Maslany (She-Hulk: Lawyer), Elijah Wood (Yellow jackets), Colin O’Brien (Wonka), Rohan Campbell (The Hardy Boys), AND Sarah Levy (Schitt’s Creek).
I loved this story when I first read it and can’t wait to see how Perkin’s brings it to life on the big screen!
