FIREFLY will have a prequel comic series

While Firefly fans would love to see the series return one day, at least the stories have been able to continue in comic book form over the years. Yes, I know it’s not the same, but some great stories have been told!

Boom! Studios has announced a new comic book series that will tell the origin story of Captain Malcolm Reynolds. It is entitled Firefly: Malcolm Reynolds year one and will explore Mal’s early adventures.

Here’s the description of the comic that was released: “Despite starting from an unlikely place, Malcolm Reynolds has always been a troublemaker. Becoming a Brownjacket was always destiny.

“But what unexpected obstacles lie in the way of him becoming the Captain fans know and love? To him who brings together and leads the crew of the spaceship Serenity?”

The series is set in the early days of the Unification War, the conflict in which the Browncoats fought a losing battle against the established dominance of the Alliance, previously touched upon by Boom’s first Firefly series.

The series is signed by writer Sam Humphries (Firefly: The Fall Guys) and artist Giovanni Fabiano. Humphries said in a statement: “It was an honor to chronicle the first year of the Unification War and Mal’s formative years.

“Unfortunately for him, war is not as glorious as we have been led to believe. Giovanni, of course, killed him, and when you read this book you will be able to say that you saw him when.”

Fabiano added: “It was a real pleasure to work on this project. It was an honor and a great responsibility to create the concept of the young versions of these characters from scratch. I had a lot of fun.”

Firefly: Malcolm Reynolds year one #1 goes on sale September 4th. The issue is available early at local comic shops, and digital copies can be purchased through Kindle, iBooks, Google Play, and other digital comic storefronts.
