SPACEBALLS sequel confirmed with Mel Brooks, Josh Gad and director Josh Greenbaum

Mel Brooks he teased a Spaceballs sequel for years and it looks like the project is officially moving forward at Amazon MGM Studios!

Josh Gad, who previously teased the project, will write, produce and star in the film. Gad worked on the screenplay with Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez (Detective Pikachu).

Gad previously spoke about the script, saying it’s “the funniest and best thing [he’s] ever worked.” As a huge fan of the original film, I can’t wait to see what this creative team comes up with or a sequel.

It was also reported that the film will be directed by Josh Greenbaum (Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar). Kevin Salter will serve as executive producer on the project.

There are no details in the story, but one thing I would like to see is Rick Moranis returning to reprise his role as Dark Helmet. This has to happen! That’s the only way this sequel could actually work! But we’ll have to wait and see.

The original 1987 Star Wars sci-fi comedy parody follows the adventures of Lone Starr (Bill Pullmann) and his assistant Barf (John Candy), a half-man, half-dog creature, as they try to save Princess Vespa (Dafne Zuniga) from the evil clutches of Dark Helmet (Moranis) and President Skroob (Brooks).

In their quest, they receive guidance from the wise and powerful Yogurt, who introduces them to “The Schwartz”, a mystical power.

This movie always makes me laugh! All I ask is that this sequel makes me laugh. And they’ll get Rick Moranis back!

What are you hoping to see? Spaceballs 2?
