James Gunn confirms that Groot died in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and that his character is different from Baby Groot

The fans of Guardians of the Galaxy the franchise is reminiscent of the story arc of the beloved tree-shaped character Groot, voiced by vin Dieselwho we first met in the debut film.

Groot single-handedly ensured the lives of his new friends when they clashed with the evil Accuser (Lee Pace). As their ship crash-landed on the surface of a nearby planet, Groot sprouted extra branches and leaves and wrapped them around his friends.

When the spaceship crashed, Groot’s plan to protect them saved everyone from death, but in the process he burned, giving his life to the cause.

Luckily, Rocket was able to retrieve one of Groot’s seeds and plant it in a flower pot. This gave birth to the character Baby Groot, who, through GOTG franchise, as well as the Avengers films, we saw Groot grow into a brooding teenager, and finally the adult we knew and loved from the first film.

But it turns out the transformation wasn’t exactly what we thought it would be. Although he had the same appearance and name, it turns out that the adult Groot we now know was last seen Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3It is NOT the same as the one in the first movie.

Director James Gunn revealed in the audio commentary of vol. 3, now available on Disney+, that the first Groot actually only appeared in one movie. Gunn explained:

“Here we see Groot reconstitute himself. He grows back over the course of the film. Groot, of course, is now a young adult Groot. Sometimes we call him ‘Swole Groot.’

It’s Baby Groot, in a youthful, adult state. And I think here we really start to see that this Groot is not the same Groot from the first film.

Many people believe that the first Groot was just reborn in this new form. Um, that’s not the case. This is a totally different Groot from the first Groot.”

Gunn then hinted that he had written a complicated backstory for Groot and that he had solid narrative reasons for replacing Groot with an exact duplicate. In Marvel Comics, Groot first appeared in 1960, although Gunn’s film version was lifted from a 2006 reinvention of the character.

Gunn went on to say:

“The first Groot sacrificed himself, died and gave birth to this Groot who is not a genetic replica of the first Groot. I have reasons in mind why I think that’s the case. I have a whole background for the character, but it’s probably will never be shared, but he is a different Groot.”

Gunn never creates any character in a half-idiotic manor. They all have backstories, many, in the case of the Guardians, tragic.

He’s done great justice to these characters and I can’t wait to see what he does with Superman and his other ventures at DC.
