Last week Ashton Kutcher made some interesting comments about AI technology and how it will affect the film industry.
A lot of people didn’t like what he had to say, but what he said is true, people just don’t want to believe it. One particular opinion that you expressed that people didn’t like was that AI was economically beneficial to the film industry.
He said, “Why would you go out and do a prop scene of a house on a TV show when you could just create the prop scene for $100? It would cost you thousands of dollars to go out and shoot.
“Action scenes where I jump off this building, you don’t have to have a stuntman do it, you could just do it [with AI].”
Even if people don’t like to hear it, this is where things are going. Hell, studios are already implementing AI tools into their businesses to reduce costs! We will continue to go in that direction.
Kutcher recently took to X to explain his stance on artificial intelligence and say that ignoring the technology’s use would be “catastrophic.”
The actor said: “I don’t think artificial intelligence will replace the film industry or the creative arts. It is an amazing tool that we should learn to work with to become more prolific and efficient as artists.
“In the same way we use Avid, final draft, greenscreen, Led bg and other technical tools. Acting as if it didn’t exist would be catastrophic. Work will change, denying it means turning a blind eye to the facts.”
“There was someone recording the film together. There was someone manning the gate. We have to be prepared and understand what will happen.”
Kutcher makes all the good points here, especially with studios that are embracing the technology like Sony Pictures, DreamWorks, and Disney, who have recently talked about the benefits of implementing artificial intelligence into their business models.
This is just the beginning of the film industry’s relationship with artificial intelligence. It will grow over time and in the future people losing their jobs due to AI is a fact. It’s already happening! Ignoring and rejecting it won’t stop it.
As someone who writes for a living, this scares the hell out of me. So, I learned everything I could about AI to see what I have to deal with.
