Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are in talks to reunite for the sequel PRACTICAL MAGIC 2

Warner Bros. has announced that a sequel to the 1998 classic is in the works, Practical magicwith the stars Sandra Bullock AND Nicole Kidman in negotiations to return.

The first film starred Bullock and Kidman as the Owens sisters, who become embroiled in a supernatural cover-up after Bullock (unintentionally) takes drugs and kills Kidman’s abusive ex-boyfriend (Goran Višnjić) forcing them to reanimate his corpse. Directed by Griffin Dunne and adapted from the 1995 novel of the same name by Alice Hoffmannthe original film remains a beloved and disturbing romantic comedy.

Akiva Goldman will write the screenplay for the new film, with Bullock and Kidman expected to produce alongside Denise Di Novi.

Fans have started talking about the future of Practical magic on Sunday, when an announcement was made on TikTok at midnight — a nod to the first film’s “midnight margaritas” scene — that the film was now available digitally and available to stream on Max. But the big news was reserved to Monday morning, where it was revealed Practical magic 2 was officially in the works.

In 2019, HBO Max was pursuing a Practical magic spin-off series, Rules of magic, based on Hoffman’s prequel novel. That series eventually fell apart, but the fandom lives on.

The film follows the women of the Owens family, a group of magically inclined female enchantresses, blessed with the supernatural gift but cursed by their matriarch. After being abandoned by her lover, pregnant and alone, Maria Owens cast a spell on herself to never experience the agony of love again. Second Practical magic tradition and cast member Stockard Channing, “As his bitterness grew, the spell turned into a curse. A curse on any man who dared to love an Owens woman. Enter Bullock and Kidman, two sisters determined to break that curse and free themselves from a lifetime of malicious gossip from their fellow citizens.

It should be a lot of fun. I love the original and would bet that Bullock and Kidman would only sign on for a sequel with a solid story, so I can’t wait to see what they come up with.
