Magnolia has released a new teaser trailer for the upcoming action comedyThelma, which is one of the indie gems to watch this year. It was a really fun movie and I hope people actually go to the cinema to watch it!
I got to see the film at Sundance earlier this year and it was my favorite film at the film festival. The story presents us with an unlikely action hero, a wonderfully played older woman named Thelma Post June Squibb.
While major Hollywood studios continue to produce remakes and sequels, we have small independent films like this that tell fun and fantastic stories.
In the film, “Thelma Post is a feisty 93-year-old grandmother who is scammed by a phone scammer pretending to be her grandson and sets off on a treacherous quest across Los Angeles, accompanied by an old friend and his motorized scooter, to reclaim what was taken from her.”
This is Squibb’s first leading film role in her 70-year career. In it, she “portrays the strong-willed Thelma with grit and determination, proving that she is more than capable of taking care of business, despite what her daughter Gail, son-in-law Alan or nephew Danny might believe.”
The film’s marketing also wants audiences to know that Squibb actually did her own stunts for the film.
The film was written and directed by Josh Margolinand he is also the protagonist Parker Posey as Thelma’s daughter, Clark Gregg as his son-in-law, and Fred Hechinger like his nephew.
Thelma is inspired by the director’s grandmother who almost fell victim to a phone scam similar to the one the film is about. So, the movie is what he imagined his grandmother would have made if she had actually been scammed.
Thelma will be released in theaters on June 21st. You can read my review of the film here.
