Here’s a great first trailer for a beautifully titled New Zealand historical epic film The convert. Movie stars Guy Pearce as Thomas Munro, a newly arrived preacher in a colonial New Zealand town in the early 19th century who finds himself at the center of a long-running battle between two Maori tribes.
It explains that the film explores “questions of faith, transformation and the nature of violence. A visceral cinematic experience, ambitious in scope and action, the film is also one of the most authentic and emotional representations of pre-colonial Aotearoa New Zealand and Māori culture ever depicted on screen.”
While the story is steeped in local history and folklore, “it is essentially a universal tale about redemption and sacrifice. It also chronicles indigenous issues that are recognizable in many places around the world and is underpinned by themes that have been explored on screen for generations.
Pearce spoke about the film, saying: “Munro came from the other side of the world to be a preacher in this city that is being born.
“But there is clearly a world that existed for many years before the arrival of white people, and the way in which different cultures try to work together… the fragility and precariousness of that is something that I find fascinating.
“I thought the script was immediately touching, realistic and quite profound. And knowing that Lee was going to make this film, I knew there was a tenderness and intelligence that maybe others wouldn’t bring.”
He went on to talk about Munro, saying: “He finds himself here in Aotearoa where he is immediately thrown into the heart of tribal warfare.
“And on many levels, as a man, as a warrior of the past, he understands the psychology of war and is very aware of being an outsider, but at the same time he firmly believes that there is an internal desire for peace. No matter where you come from in the world, we should all be able to find it.
The film comes from the director Lee Tamahori and he is also the protagonist Tioreore Ngatai-Melbourne, Antonio Te Maioha, Jacqueline McKenzieAND Lawrence Makoare.
The movie comes out July 12th and I can’t wait to watch it!
