Last summer, we were treated to a fun cinematic experience when Oppenheimer AND Barbie both opened on the same weekend. If you’re a movie buff like us here at GeekTyrant, you may have gone to the theater twice that weekend to see both films.
These two films were especially fun to see in the theater because Oppenheimer it was a large scale image that was best seen on the larger screen, and Barbie it was an event film where fans showed up in costume. It was like a party at the theater and helped elevate the experience of going to the movies, making it feel like a pre-pandemic time.
But the CEO of Netflix Ted Sarandos he believes those two films would have been just as great if they had been released on the streamer. Sarandos recently told the New York Times:
“Both of those films would be great for Netflix. They certainly would have enjoyed equally large audiences on Netflix. And so I don’t think there’s any reason to believe that certain types of films work or don’t work. There’s no reason why to believe that the movie itself is better on any screen size for all people My son is an editor He’s 28 and he watched Lawrence of Arabia on his phone But it’s just a cool thing development of technology, there are benefits to. the public.”
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with watching movies on your home TV or smaller device if that’s what you want to do.
But I think these films were very positive for movie theater culture and created an opportunity for people to go out and be together and see films in an environment that everyone was talking about.
There are so many movies in production that it seems like filmmakers should be able to decide where to see their films. I like movies to end up streaming to give us a second chance at home, but if filmmakers want to give fans a chance to see them in theaters first, I like having that option too.
