For years, George Lucas’ Star Wars the films have been criticized for featuring casts full of white men. Well, Lucas recently addressed this topic and dismissed criticism that most of the characters in the film are aliens.
During a conversation at the Cannes Film Festival, before receiving the festival’s honorary Palme d’Or, Lucas spoke about some of the negative comments he has received over the years.
Lucas explained: “They would say, ‘They’re all white men.’ Most people are aliens! The idea is that you should accept people for who they are, whether they’re big and hairy or whether they’re green or whatever. The idea is that all people are equal.”
Lucas went on to point out that the only beings present in the Star Wars In the universe it was the robots who were discriminated against.
He said: “It was a way of saying, you know, people always discriminate against something and sooner or later, this is what will happen. I mean, we’re already starting with AI, saying, “Well, we can’t trust those robots.”
Lucas went on to talk about the issue of race, saying, “In the first one there were some Tunisians who were dark, and in the second one I had Billy Williamsand the [prequels]which they also criticized, I had Sam Jackson. He wasn’t a scoundrel like Lando. He was one of the best Jedi.
Lucas also weighed in on the portrayal of women in Star Wars movie, saying, “Who do you think the heroes are in these stories? What do you think Princess Leia was? She is the leader of the rebellion.
“She’s the one who takes this kid who knows nothing and this rambunctious, know-it-all kid who can’t do anything and tries to save the rebellion with these clowns… And it’s the same thing with Queen Amidala. “
He continued: “You can’t just put a woman in your pants and expect her to be a hero. They can wear clothes, they can wear whatever they want. It’s their brain and their ability to think, plan and be logistical. That’s what the hero is.”
I guess these are some thoughts Lucas wanted to get off his chest. You may agree with him, you may disagree with him, but regardless of what you think, his original Star Wars movies changed the movie industry forever and fans love those movies!
