Studio Ghibli continues to celebrate the success of Hayao Miyazaki’S The boy and the heronand as Miyazaki is considering working on his next film, he believes the golden age of anime is over.
Miyazaki and his son were recently awarded the Honorary Palme d’Or Goro Miyazaki she collected the award for him. Speaking to 20 Minutes in France, Goro Miyazaki relayed some comments his father had made regarding the award.
Miyazaki said, “He was happy, but he feels that the golden age of anime is over. He feels that this award symbolizes the end of his career.”
As Miyazaki notes, things are starting to change with the medium, and that’s something anime fans may need to consider moving forward.
At the same time, anime is more popular now than ever. The demand for television anime and feature films continues to grow. There are so many anime projects out there and in development, it’s hard to keep up with everything, and there are so many good ones!
In this regard, Miyazaki notes, this may simply reflect a “golden age” that will essentially act as an anime “bubble” that may burst at some point in the future.
Speaking previously about the future of animation, co-founder of Studio Ghibli Toshio Suzukihe said: “I think in the end, whether you do it by hand or on the computer, you have to have artistic aptitude otherwise you can’t do anything good. That’s how I see things.
“However, some think that only CG can do it, and the same goes for hand drawing. To put it simply, let’s take this movie as an example. The way we made a human appear from inside a bird, you could only do it by hand. CG couldn’t handle it. So I think each of them will develop in their own way.”
What do you think about the current state of anime? Do you think the golden age of anime is over?
