It’s been over four years since Disney announced they were making a live-action Hercules. This has always been an ambitious undertaking, as this is a film about gods and mythological creatures, and it is also a large-scale musical. But the Russo Brothersbest known for directing marvel projects such as Avengers: Endgamethey stepped up to produce, and it looked like they were going to keep up the pace, but it was all very slow.
Guy Ritchiewho directed the live-action Aladdin, was on board to direct for a while, but has since left the project. A new director has not yet been hired, but Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings writer, David Callaham, is said to be writing the screenplay. He signed on before the writers’ strike last year, but according to the Russos, that hasn’t moved the script forward yet.
In a recent interview with Total Film (via Toonado.com), the Russos revealed that they’re still “waiting for a script,” meaning we’re nowhere close to going into production on the film.
The brothers had previously said of the project: “There are questions about how to translate it into a musical. The audience today has been formed by TikTok, right? What are their expectations for what that musical looks and feels like? It can be a lot.” of entertainment and help us push the boundaries of how a modern musical is performed.”
Aside from the casting rumors, like Ariana Grande (Evil) AND Taron Egerton (Kingsman: The Secret Service) being in the running to play Hercules and Meg, we have nothing new to report. Stay tuned and we’ll let you know what we hear as the project progresses.
