It’s been over a year since the Oscar winner was announced Anne Hathaway would return to her starring role as Mia Thermopolis in the sequel, The Princess Diaries 3. There has been no word on the film’s script or production since then, and fans have been wondering if the entire project ended up on the cutting room floor.
Luckily, that’s not the case and Hathaway confirmed that the film is still in the works. In a recent interview with V magazine, the actress said that development on the long-awaited sequel continues and that the intention remains to get it off the ground.
“We’re in a good position,” Hathaway said. “That’s all I can say. There is nothing to announce yet. But we’re in a good place.”
When asked if she thought of another of her hit films, The devil wears Pradacould ever be made into a sequel, Hathaway responded:
“Probably not. We all love each other, and if someone could figure out a way to do it, I think we’d all be crazy not to. But there’s a huge difference in today’s world with technology, and one of the aspects of that particular story it was about producing a physical object. Now, with so much digital, it would just be very different. Maybe me, Stanley, Meryl, Dave Frankel, Patricia Field… we should do something else together. It would be fun.”
Directed by the late Gary Marshall it’s based Meg Cabot’s novel, the original from 2001 The Princess Diaries the film follows the story of an awkward American teenager who discovers that she is the heir to the throne of the European kingdom of Genovia. Julia Andrews she played the queen of the fictional nation. The family film became a box office hit with $165 million in ticket sales worldwide. The next film, also directed by Marshall and introducing the world to Chris Pine, was equally successful in theaters with $134 million worldwide.
The Princess Diaries Franchise screenwriter Aadrita Mukerji (Reacher, Supergirl) will return for the third film. Although Julie Andrews hasn’t committed to returning, Hathaway said she hopes her grandmother from the franchise can return to reprise her role.
