Details Revealed for GAME OF THRONES Spinoff Series 10,000 SHIPS, a Moses-Inspired Epic

There was a game of Thrones spin-off series in development at one point in development by Brian Helgelandwho previously worked on projects such as LA confidential, a knight’s tale, The man on fireAND mystical river.

The film was titled Ten thousand ships and the story would have been inspired by Moses and centered on Queen Nymeria. Helgeland recently shared some details about the scrapped series, and it sounds like it would have been a great show!

He was working on this project in 2017, a few years earlier game of Thrones concluded. Screenwriter Amanda Segel was hired as a writer for the series, but the show was never officially greenlit by HBO.

Helgeland began: “It turned out great, but I think they felt the period of my show was too far from the pillars of the original. That’s why it hasn’t been harvested yet, but nothing has ever died. My script was based on Queen Nymeria and this little blurb about her that was in an encyclopedia of Westeros.”

Speaking about the story, he revealed: “Essentially, it was the story of Moses, but swapping him for Nymeria. His country is ruined and his people are forced to live on the water, which is why the show was called “Ten Thousand Ships.”

He continues: “They will end up having to leave and find a new home like the Israelites who left Egypt. She leads all these people, trying to keep everyone together, but things are always in danger of falling apart as they travel across a fictionalized version of the Mediterranean, looking for a new home to settle in.”

The creator of the shared the following details: “Their life was nomadic. Living in a raft city held together, this big floating city. At times, the characters come ashore, but ultimately they are driven from the land as they search for a home, their version of the promised land.”

Helgeland went on to talk about the meeting with George R. R. Martin for the project, saying: “I met with George RR Martin to pitch him the idea, which he approved. Unfortunately I didn’t work with him more closely, but I would have if the show had been revived.

He added: “It was a bit like Ray Harryhausen’s Sinbad films mixed with ‘The Odyssey.’ In a way, Nymeria is Odysseus, but instead of a crew of 12, she is responsible for every citizen of this floating city-state. My work is still there if HBO wants to take it back. I had fun developing it and you never know.

I would really love to see that story come to life! It sounds like an amazing epic adventure series. HBO can still pull this off if they want, but for now they’re focusing on other Game of Thrones projects.

House of the Dragon Season 2 will arrive this summer and a second spin-off series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knightis is currently in development with Peter Claffey like Dunk, while Dexter Sol Ansell was chosen as Egg.

The show will go into production later this year.
