Stand by Me it’s a classic, fan-favorite film for so many of us, and it’s been one of the films we love to revisit and hear all the backstories and behind-the-scenes stories that went into its creation. One thing we always heard from the actors who played the young cast members (Wil Wheaton, Phoenix River, Corey FeldmanAND Jerry O’Connell) was how intimidated they were by the movie’s bully, played by Kiefer Sutherlandand while that’s true, a more recent rumor claims that Sutherland actually bullied the young cast members, and Sutherland wants to set the record straight.
In a recent appearance on The speech, Sutherland was asked about the gossip, which was supposedly used to maintain character while staying away from the camera. He replied:
“Absolutely not true. First of all I’m not that kind of actor and I wouldn’t want to be that kind of person. I spent a lot of time with River Phoenix because we both played guitar, and that was kind of a discovery for him. Even though I was seven years older, we were both starting out, right. And so there was a lot of discussion about, “How do you develop a character,” “What is your process.” It’s actually very funny that at the age of 17 I was there Stand by Me, I probably had a more thorough process than I do now. But we couldn’t work together. I think that’s one of the things that’s been frustrating for me when I think about it Stand by Meit’s that they always ask me what everyone else was like… we actually just had that big scene at the end where Wil Wheaton pulls out his gun and I had to run away like a little girl.
Jerry O’Connell, who also appeared on the show, stepped in to defend his friend and co-star.
“You were 17 when you did it Stand by Me? I felt like I was 40… I just thought I was the most grown up person… Now, I will say that Kiefer didn’t bully us, there was no bullying. But Kiefer, I was so afraid of you.”
Sutherland added:
“We met about 10 years later Stand by Me, and someone said, “Oh, you should go say hello to him, that’s Jerry O’Connell.” And I said, “No, he’s not.” We said goodbye and I gave you a big hug, then I left, looked at my friend and said, “Wow, he has a much better coach than me.”
It’s pretty funny! It’s good to know that Sutherland didn’t terrorize his young co-stars and that they remained friends.
