Tony Shalhoub had great success in the eight-season series Monk, which earned him three of his four Emmy Awards. The show ran from 2002 to 2009, and fans were thrilled when Shalhoub and his wife Brooke Adams made a four-minute film depicting Monk during the lockdown, which helped get the ball rolling for Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Movie About Monk. The film, released in December on Peacock, follows the San Francisco detective suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder who returns to solve one last, very personal case involving his beloved stepdaughter Molly.
Shalhoub spoke about returning to the character with the show’s creator, Andy Breckmannon a panel on Deadline’s Contenders Television, saying:
“It seemed a little risky at first. We wanted to raise the stakes, we didn’t want to just come back with episode 126. We wanted it to be more special. We wanted it to be some kind of event, on a larger scale.”
Revisiting the beloved character “wasn’t terrifying, but it was a little daunting,” the actor said. “But Andy came up with this great script and Peacock had such a positive energy. Everyone was excited to revisit it. When we got to the first day’s shoot, we were on a roll. It didn’t take long to get back in.”
Along with Shalhoub, the film features many of the series’ original cast members, including Ted Levine, Traylor Howard, Jason Gray Stanford, Melora Hardin AND Ettore Elizondo. New cast members include Caitlin McGee (Domestic economy) as Molly Evans, AND James Purefoy (Sex education) as Rick Eden.
And good news, Monk fans: Breckman is definitely ready to “explore another chapter.” “This is my retirement plan,” he said.
