A documentary film is in development that will tell the origin story of the world’s largest pop culture convention, San Diego Comic-Con. The film will be based on Matthew Klickstein’s book, See You in San Diego: An Oral History of Comic-Con, Fandom, and the Triumph of Geek Culture.

Klickstein will produce the film alongside the Emmy- and Oscar-nominated producer Davide Permut AND Safdie Brothers producer Oscar Boyson.

THE See you in San Diego The documentary will follow “how a scrappy group of teenage fans, zinesters, illustrators, stoners, hippies, weirdos, bookworms and science buffs in the late 1960s joined forces with an unemployed 30-year-old comics fan to create what is now has become one of the most influential comics. pop culture events ever.

In recent years, San Diego Comic-Con has twice been recognized as the largest pop culture gathering in the world by the Guinness Book of World Records.

Permut said in a statement: “This is the quintessential story of the underdog – young fanboys and fangirls full of passion and dreams – that developed into the birth of what has evolved into a global phenomenon.”

Boyson added: “Culture comes from community, ambition and the often naive belief that you can change things without waiting for anyone’s permission. The origins of Comic-Con are no exception, and at a time when many of us are wondering what the future of entertainment will look like, it’s an important and timely story to tell.”

Klickstein said: “It has been a true honor and privilege over the past five years to become the primary chronicler of the early years of Comic-Con and its original founders, most of whom have become close friends and mentors. This upcoming expansion to the screen will be a perfect conclusion to our ongoing labor of love that illuminates the personal story of Con’s early years from those who made it, all in a compelling form that will inspire viewers and fans everywhere.”

It explains: “Thanks to the support of more than 50 interviewees originally assembled by pop culture historian Klickstein for his two previous releases of the Story: 2021 six-part audio docuseries via SiriusXM/Stitcher Comic-Con begins and the oral history book See you in San Diegopublished by Fantagraphics in 2022 – key expert testimony will be presented by Con’s surviving co-founders and early integral contributors such as: Scott Shaw!, David Clark, Roger Freedmann, Barry Alfonso, Wendy EveryoneAND Paul M.
