STAR WARS: THE ACOLYTE Showrunner Explains Why She Hired a Writer Who’s Never Seen a STAR WARS Movie

Here’s something about Lucasfilm Star Wars: The Acolyte this will definitely spark some conversation among fans. Showrunner of the series Leslye Promontory (Russian doll) revealed that he hired a writer he had “literally never seen Star Wars” to work on the show and in a recent interview he explained why.

The first trailer for the series was released last week and received mixed reactions Star Wars fans. There are elements that seemed interesting, but many other aspects didn’t seem to be popular with fans. Personally I’m curious about the era of Star Wars universe being explored.

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Headland talked about the development of the eight-episode first season and explained why it was important for her to bring someone into the writers’ room who initially had no knowledge of Star Wars franchising, saying:

“I just thought it would be cool to get the point of view of a person who had never seen Star Wars until she was in the room. And she said to me, ‘Why do you want me in this room? I’ve never seen Star Wars. . I have no idea. I think there’s a dog, but I don’t know anything about it.”

“And I thought, ‘First of all, you’re an incredible writer, but that’s why I want you here. I want you to question the narrative. I don’t want myself, as a longtime fan, to rely on simply to on particular references to create emotional rhythms. I want those emotional rhythms to be earned and controlled by someone who is not very familiar with the industry.'”

I’m especially surprised that Headland found someone who had never seen any Star Wars movie! Especially something that works in Hollywood, but hey, apparently those people exist! It didn’t last long because the writer ended up watching the movies:

“And it was really funny because that Christmas he finally watched the original trilogy. He watched the prequels too, but he kept texting me [about the Original Trilogy] and it said, ‘Luke and Vader are…’. All those things we’d known all along were driving her crazy.

“He was like, ‘Luke and Leia are brother and sister!? What the fuck!?’ She would text me all these things and I thought it was really funny. So she trained herself to be able to be in the room, but it was really fun to have someone like her help her collaborate.”

I understand why Headland would see the benefit of hiring a writer who hasn’t experienced the franchise before because sometimes it’s nice to have an outside perspective on things. But the inclusion of someone like this is sure to raise some eyebrows because Star Wars fans want to see these projects carefully crafted by those who know the stories and lore.

The story is described as “a mystery thriller that will take viewers into a galaxy of dark secrets and emerging dark side powers in the final days of the High Republic era.” The High Republic is set 100 years before the start of the Skywalker Saga.

In The Acolyte, “An investigation into a shocking crime wave pits a respected Jedi Master (Lee Jung-jae) against a dangerous warrior from his past (Stenberg). As new clues emerge, the boys travel down a dark path where sinister forces reveal that all is not what it seems…”

Star Wars: The Acolyte arrives on Disney+ with a two-episode premiere on June 4.
