The first trailer of Alien: Romulus it was recently released and looked great! I have high hopes for this movie and the trailer definitely got fans excited! He looks like the director Fede Alvarez made a solid new Alien movie!
The story of his film is set between the events of Ridley Scott’S Alien AND James Cameron’S Aliens and if you saw the trailer, you noticed that the style, tone and story were heavily inspired by those films. When he spoke about the film’s setting in those films, the director revealed that he made sure to work with the directors of those films to ensure he didn’t ruin the larger mythology of the franchise. He told Variety:
“Alien: Romulus is set 20 years after the first and, for me, I don’t see it as a distortion of the canon. It’s something I’m happy to do, making sure that everything follows and is part of the great story of the “Alien” franchise – not just in the story, but also when it comes to how to make it happen. I spoke to Ridley [Scott] as a producer, and I talked about it at length with James Cameron on the screenplay level. After the film was finished, I showed it to him.
“Everyone is really important, from the visual effects supervisor on Aliens to the guys who make the miniatures, and we hired a lot of them to work on the film. Otherwise it’s difficult to define the style, look and feel of a film the way I wanted. It was the greatest pleasure in making this film, to be able to carry on the whole process.”
When asked how he achieved his goals with this film and how he incorporated their foundational knowledge of the franchise, he said:
“Obviously Alien and Aliens are very different films, but with this story we found a way to make sure we didn’t have to choose. There are some amazing, clever things [accomplished] in those films. You really want to push yourself and create this world, so as a director you’re not sitting in your chair and just pointing at shit. I do the VFX shots myself. I’m puppeteering there with them. Every movie, I think, ‘Okay, this is the one where I finally got to sit down and point the shit out.’ It doesn’t happen. The movies get bigger and I’m still there on the floor getting my hands dirty. And that’s exactly what Ridley and Cameron told me: the only way to make this movie is to be involved at every level. These are films handcrafted by their directors, that’s why they are so unique. This is not a studio movie where you go in, do your thing and there’s a machine that knows how to do it.”
The director was then asked what the film has that the other films in the series don’t have, and he replied:
“Well, it’s definitely not just me. Approximately six years pass between the films, so each film was released in a different era of cinema, which is why they are so different. But for me it was really taking it back to its roots. I wanted to go back not just to the style of the original films, but to the genre of the original films. I really wanted to go back to the pure horror of the first film and take those thriller elements that “Aliens” has and also “Alien 3”. We went to great lengths to keep it faithful to the cinematic techniques of the first film. But if anyone is worried, “Will it be too retro?” Don’t worry, 2023 will pour through every window. There is no way to stop the modernity of cinema. And from that combination of the best of the classics and the best of today, you get something new.”
Alien: Romulus follows a “group of young people in a distant world who find themselves confronted with the most terrifying life form in the universe.” Alvarez’s initial pitch was said to be a “really good story with a lot of characters you’ve never seen before”.
Alvarez will direct from his script written by Rodo Sayagues. Ridley Scott he is also a producer of the film along with Michael Pruss (The Boston Strangler) for Scott Free, with Brent O’Connor (High speed train), Elizabeth Cantillon (Persuasion) AND Tom Moran (The king of donuts) as executive producers.
Alien: Romulus will be released in theaters on August 16th.
