James Gunn’s SUPERMAN was planned as a standalone film before the DCU reboot was announced

James Gunn was initially hired to write to Superman film for Warner Bros. in 2022 with an eye to directing. He was hired by Mike Deluca at the time, and Gunn recently revealed that the plan was to make a standalone film Superman movies the same way Matt Reeves made a standalone Batman movie. It would have been a standalone film separate from the DCEU.

Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav then decided to scrap the DCEU and start from scratch, and then thought it would be a smart move to put Gunn in charge of the reboot with Peter Safran. Gunn and Safran have planned the first leg of their DCU journey with Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters and Gunn is now in production on Superman, which will launch the cinematic side of the DCU.

Fans are really excited to see what Gunn ends up doing with Superman, and I think he’s going to pull off something amazing!

Superman will tell the story of “Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”

Superman stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman; Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane; Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor; Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern; Isabela Mercede as Hawkgirl; Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt/Mr. Terrific; Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen; María Gabriela de Faría in the role of Angela Spica, aka The Engineer; Sara Sampaio, in the role of Eva Teschmacher; AND Terence Rosemore as Otis.

Superman will launch the cinematic portion of DC Studios’ Gods and Monsters: Part 1. The theatrical release is scheduled for July 11, 2025.

James Gunn said when Michael De Luca hired him to write ‘SUPERMAN’ around August 2022 it would be separated from the DCEU similar to ‘THE BATMAN’ and JJ Abrams and Ta-Nehisi Coates’ ‘Black Superman’ project which would be a separate Elseworld project rather than part of a shared universe.
