Margaret Qualley (Once upon a time in Hollywood, Housekeeper) has signed on to play Amanda Knox in an upcoming untitled limited series that has been ordered on Hulu. The streamer has ordered eight episodes of one hour each. The official description states that the show is “based on the true story of how Knox was wrongly convicted of the murder of her roommate Meredith Kercher and her 16-year odyssey to get rid of her.”
KJ Steinberg (this is us, Lovers, Gossip Girl) is the writer and executive producer of the series. Qualley will executive produce in addition to starring. Warren Littlefield, Lisa Harrison, Ann Johnson and Graham Littlefield of The Littlefield Company will also serve as executive producers alongside Monica Lewinsky, as well as Knox and Chris Robinson via Knox Robinson Productions. 20th Television is the studio.
This will now be the second limited series based on a real person in which Qualley will star. He previously directed the Netflix series Housekeeperbased on the memoir of the same name by Stefania Terra. Her work on that show earned Qualley both a Golden Globe and Emmy nomination. She previously earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series for her performance Ann Reinking in FX Fosse/Verdon.
Knox’s story has been the subject of numerous on-screen projects to date. In addition to numerous special reports and documentaries, Lifetime aired the original film Amanda Knox: murder trial in Italy in 2011. The film Still water starring Matt Damon, Abigail Breslin and Camille Cottin, which is believed to have been inspired by Knox’s story, was released in 2021.
