Disney recently released the director’s first photo Joachim Rønning’STron: Ares and an interesting detail about the dress was pointed out by Gizmodo and suggests the story is going in an interesting direction.
One of the things that most fans have obviously noticed is the color red, which is always the color of the villain. The original film’s villain, Sark, sported the color red. Then there is the data disk, the one Ares has in the image is not in the shape of a disk.
The only thing I didn’t initially notice was what’s on the Ares data drive. Once enlarged, you can see “Dillinger Systems” printed inside.
Edward Dillinger was introduced in the first Tron film and is the head of ENCOM, a powerful and influential software company. As the key antagonist, he is ambitious and unscrupulous, having stolen software created by Kevin Flynn, to further his own position within the company.
Dillinger uses the Master Control Program (MCP), an advanced, autonomous artificial intelligence, to impose his control over the corporate network and eliminate any threats to his power. His actions set the stage for the film’s conflict, as Flynn seeks to prove Dillinger’s theft and restore his own reputation, which he does.
In Tron: Legacy, Cilian Murphy played Edward Dillinger Jr., the original character’s son; he is a software engineer at ENCOM and is on the board of directors. He was introduced as a potential villain, but as far as I know he’s not in the film. But a Dillinger character has to be involved somehow.
So what makes this so interesting is that if Ares is part of Dillinger Systems in the movie and Ares is the main character, we’re going to have a story from the point of view of an evil character in this world. The film will be about the villain, not the hero, and that’s a very interesting and intriguing direction to take things.
The film follows a highly sophisticated program, Ares, “which is sent from the digital world to the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humanity’s first encounter with AI beings.”
Thus, humanity’s first encounter with an AI being will be evil. What do you think?
