Actress Auli’i Cravalho is officially returning to voice Moana in the recently announced sequel film, Moana 2, which will arrive towards the end of the year. She joins Dwayne Johnsonwho has already signed on to return to voice Maui in the next chapter of their story.
Disney CEO Bob Iger said of the project, which he made a surprise announcement about two weeks ago, “Moana remains an incredibly popular franchise, and we can’t wait to bring you more of Moana and Maui when Moana 2 hits theaters this November.
The official description of the film reads:
“The epic animated musical Moana 2 from Walt Disney Animation Studios takes audiences on a vast new journey featuring Moana, Maui and an all-new crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her explorer ancestors, Moana must journey to the distant seas of Oceania and dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she has ever faced.
The film was originally developed as a series, but as Iger explained, “we were impressed with what we saw and felt it deserved a theatrical release.” He also confirmed that he will direct the previously announced live-action adaptation of the film starring Johnson Hamilton‘S Thomas Kailit is still in development.
Vaiana 2 is directed by Dave Derrick Jr.featuring music from Grammy winners Abigail Barlow AND Emily BearGrammy nominee Opetaia Foa’i and three-time Grammy winner Marco Mancina.
