Ari Aster (Hereditary, Midsommar) is producing an English-language remake of the crazy 2003 Korean film that revolutionized the genre Save the green planet!, and Variety reports it Poor things director Yorgos Lanthimos is on board to direct.
In the film, “Byeong-gu believes that Earth is on the brink of an alien invasion and that he is the only one who can save it. With the help of his faithful girlfriend, he kidnaps and brutally tortures corporate executives and politicians who he believes are aliens in disguise.
Variety also reports it Emma Stone (Poor things) is in talks to reunite with Lanthimos in the film. If cast, “Stone would most likely have a supporting role.”
This film project feels like the perfect collaboration between Lanthimos and Aster, and it’s not hard to imagine Lanthimos’ cinematic style being incorporated into a story like this.
Joon-hwan Jang wrote and directed the original film, which mixes science fiction, comedy and horror with paranoia and ultraviolence. Save the Green Planet is full of shocking moments and unexpected twists.
Ari Aster and Square Peg partner Lars Knudsen said in a previous statement: “Oscillating with youthful abandon between borderline suspense, absurd slapstick, grim horror, and a deeply felt (and earned) sense of tragedy, Save The Green Planet! is one of the most extraordinary films to come out of South Korea – out of this recent wave or any other wave, for that matter.”
The original movie is pretty wild and I imagine Aster and Lanthimos will do some crazy things with this remake.
