Epic Pictures has released a trailer for an upcoming indie coming-of-age film titled Before you change your mind. The story is set in 1987 and focuses on young Robin, who forms a complicated friendship with the school bully.
The synopsis explains that Robin is “a young non-binary person whose family moves to a small town in Alberta, where they face the challenges of adapting to a new environment by befriending Carter, the school bully.”
The film was directed by Trevor Anderson, who says, “When I was a teenager in Canada in the ’80s, I was often asked, ‘Are you a boy or a girl?’ I wish I could have left that question hanging in the air unanswered, like Robin does in the film. It was a time when kids like me – or like our hero Robin – wouldn’t use words like non-binary or genderqueer to describe our gender. We knew we were somehow different and that the difference would be palpable to those around us, but because we had no language to describe it, we never talked about it – and we still had to survive middle school and answer more pressing questions like: “Who likes me?” “Does he like me?” “What kind of person am I?” ‘Where do I fit in?'”
Movie stars Vaughan Murrae in the role of Robin, Domenico Lippa, Lacey Oake, Matthew RankinAND Shannon Blanchet. Before you change your mind will be released in select US theaters on March 1, 2024, then on VOD starting March 5.
