GHOSTBUSTERS: FROZEN EMPIRE Director Says Film Is Scarier, Funnier, Teases a ‘Dangerous’ New Villain

When the ghost Buster the franchise is rebooted with the big 2021 movie, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, the story played out as both a love letter to the original fans and a fresh start with interesting new characters and a new take on some old villains and plots. It was the perfect bridge to this new frontier. It seems that in the next movie, Ghostbusters: The Frozen Empirewe will see something we have never dreamed of before in this universe, and director Gil Kenan promises more scares, more laughs, and a villain unlike any we’ve seen before.

In the most recent edition of SFX magazine, Kenan described the film by saying:

“This is a scary Ghostbusters movie, I decided to go for the thrill. As a big screen experience, I think it will be a scary and fun movie. The secret is that the scarier a scene, the funnier the next joke will be played. This is how the pendulum swings with tone.Turning the lever to make sure the jokes land is one way to make sure the jokes are funnier.

He went on to talk about the new mythology created for the film, as well as the darkness within the story:

“We’ve moved beyond the Gozer mythology that defined Ghostbusters and was reignited in Afterlife as a way to close that initial loop. We’ve finally broken free to now introduce a completely new threat, and with that, we’ve created a new mythology and have expanded how deep, how scary and how dangerous a villain could be in one of these stories.”

I’ve loved every little bit of footage we’ve gotten to see so far and can’t wait to see the whole movie when it comes out next month! Ghostbusters: The Frozen Empire will be released in theaters on March 22.
