Oppenheimer AND Principle director Christopher Nolan he has played with many different genres in the films he has made, but one he has yet to tackle is a horror film. I would love to see Nolan make a horror movie, and he would love to make one! But, at the moment, he is struggling to find the perfect idea to make one.
While speaking at a BFI event in London, an audience member asked the director if he would ever consider making a horror film, to which he replied:
“I would like to make a horror film. But I think a really good horror movie requires a really great idea. And those are few and far between. So I haven’t found a story that lends itself to that.”
Nolan went on to talk about what he finds interesting in the horror genre, saying:
“But I think it’s a very interesting genre from a cinematic point of view. It’s also one of the few genres where studios make a lot of these films, and they’re films that have a lot of bleakness, a lot of abstraction. They have many of the qualities that Hollywood is generally very reluctant to put into films, but this is a genre where it’s allowed.”
Nolan also said it Oppenheimer contains horror elements as he believes it “is appropriate to the subject matter”. In reality, however, the closest thing to traditional horror that we have seen from Nolan are the Scarecrow sequences Batman begins.
It would be fascinating to see what kind of horror story Nolan would tell. There are a lot of great untapped ideas out there, but we’ll just have to wait and see if one of his comes up that he ultimately moves forward with.
