How much screen time do the elegant spider costumes in MADAME WEB take up?

Like Sony Pictures’ Marvel film, Mrs. Web is torn apart by most critics, more information about the film is revealed. One thing I wanted to talk about specifically in this post is the amount of screen time the main characters get to wear their fancy spider suits in the movie. There are some spoilers in this article.

The costumes from the film are worn by Sydney Sweeney as Julia Cornwall/Spider-Woman, Celeste O’Connor as Mattie Franklin/Spider Girl e Isabela Mercede as Anya Corazon/Araña.

Well, it turns out that if you’ve seen any of the movie’s trailers, it’s not much more than what you see in the trailer. The costumes are only in the film for a couple of minutes… if that. So, the reality of the screen time allotted to these meticulously crafted costumes falls short of expectations.

The climactic battle with the trio of Spider-Women battling Ezekiel Sims, teased as a pivotal battle in promotional trailers, is limited to a short sequence that barely extends beyond the trailer’s showcase.

Also, SPOILER ALERT, the fight is revealed to be a premonition experienced by Ezekiel, and is presented in a way that unfortunately obscures the full appreciation of the details of the costumes.

On top of that, Julia, Mattie, and Anya don’t even gain their superpowers or don their supersuits until the film’s conclusion hints at their eventual transformation. This pivotal moment in the film, however, is marred by the use of seemingly recycled footage, which dilutes the impact of their heroic appearance.

As for Dakota Johnson’s Cassie Webb, aka Madame Web, finally “puts on” her costume only in the final moments of the film. The reveal is fleeting, however, and offers only a few seconds’ glimpse of her costume.

The creative mind behind these costumes is Ngila Dixonand the director of the film, SJ Clarkson spoke about the costumes, saying: “Just hire Ngila Dixon. She’s the most amazing costume designer. She comes from a place of character and really thinks about who they are, who they want to be and what they would be like. “I like being portrayed. I think this is a balance of what we got from those looks.”

He added: “They wanted to be confident, but there’s something pulling them back, and that’s where Ngila is absolutely brilliant. Obviously, with how that translated into them as normal teenagers and their potential selves in the future.”

It’s a shame that they didn’t make more use of the costumes that Dixon designed and created in the film.
