Michael Cera says Ben Affleck was originally supposed to film the fight scene with Allan in BARBIE

Michele Cera he played the role of Allan in Barbie movie, and he really stole the show in the few scenes he was in. The character was a sidekick to Ken, and while there are many different iterations of Ken, there is only one Allan. His big claim to fame is that all of Ken’s clothes fit him well, even though we only see him in that striped shirt and shorts until he joins forces with the Barbies. He’s clearly a tortured kid, seeking approval from his friend Ken, and it’s funny when he gets his moment to shine in the film by taking on a group of construction worker Kens, and returns to Barbieland to help set things right.

The actor explained it Ben Affleck he was originally cast in the film and would have fought as Allan’s stunt double, or perhaps as another Ken. The role wasn’t very clear, but Cera explained in a Q&A session attended by The AV Club:

“I wasn’t even supposed to fight in the movie. Can I say what it should have been? It had to be like this Ben Affleck. Right? Can I say it?”

Cera didn’t offer many other details about Affleck’s character, but went on to say:

“I think Ben wanted to do it, but he was directing his own movie. They say, ‘Okay, Ben’s out, something has to happen here.’ So you will fight them.’ So I had to join the stunt team. I had just gotten over COVID and they had me working out and I almost died. I’m just warming up! I had to lay down in my trailer and they sent the nurse to see me, and I was sent home. So we gave it a second try and I learned it. This is basically the story.

Cera continued by talking about the violence of the scene and how it evolved during the making of the film:

“This was never part of Allan’s journey. In rehearsal we did the thing where I kill the guy with the shovel and it was just a joke, and we were like, “Greta won’t let me do that.” homocide someone in the movie.” And he’s in the movie!”

Much of this likely stems from Gerwig’s implicit trust in Cera, who previously said she had a “deep understanding” of Allan. Gerwig explained in a previous Q&A:

“I remember right after reading the script and doing the Zoom, you said, ‘I hope Allan is right behind the people who are slightly out of focus.’ And I thought, ‘That’s Allan!’”

The respect between the couple is mutual. At Thursday’s event, Cera recalled that “the script was very visual,” but when she finally took action Barbie settled, he said:

“I have never been so incredulous about the production. I thought, “How much… how much money does all this cost?” I couldn’t believe everything I was seeing. And then the fact that Greta was so calm and exuberant and creative in the eyes of a production, that side of her was just completely baffling to me. I thought, “Okay, everything will be fine.” She knows what she’s doing.’”

He was right. The movie was great, and while the scene may have been hilarious with Affleck, she remained unique with Cera.
