I have an interesting video here for you to watch, released by GKIDS, the distributor of Studio Ghibli The boy and the heron. The video features the co-founder of Studio Ghibli Toshio Suzuki talking about the director Hayao Miyazaki and the future of animation.
Suzuki explains what inspired Miyazaki to make The boy and the heron and explains that the film is a “sort of autobiography. Covering his birth to what he was like today.
Speaking about the future of animation, he said: “I think in the end, whether you make it by hand or on the computer, you have to have artistic aptitude otherwise you can’t make anything good. That’s how I see things. However, some think that only CG can do, and the same goes for hand drawing. To put it simply, let’s take this movie as an example. The way we made a human appear from inside a bird, you could only do it by hand. CG couldn’t handle it. So I think each of them will develop in their own way.”
I’ve always loved and preferred hand-drawn animation and would love to see more studios embrace it. Maybe one day, but right now Hollywood only likes their CG animated projects.
