In every comic book movie made, there are undeniable hits that dominate the box office and discussion. Movies like The dark Knight, Avengers: EndgameAND Spider-Man: No Way Home they rightfully receive a lot of praise and adoration from fans and critics. But what about the other films that have been made? The cinematic offerings that may not have set the world on fire but still hold a special place in the hearts of those who experienced them. I thought it would be fun to start a conversation about these underrated comic book movies and ask… What do you consider the most underrated comic book movie?
Every comic book fan has their favorite movie that they feel doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. It could be a lesser-known adaptation of a beloved character, a quirky indie film with a unique take on the genre, or even a critically acclaimed indie film that didn’t make much of a splash with mainstream audiences. The beauty of this question lies in its subjectivity; there are no right or wrong answers, only personal preferences and passionate arguments in defense of undervalued masterpieces.
One of my choices is The Rocket Launcher, Joe Johnston1991 adventure film based on the comic book series by Dave Stevens. Set in 1938 Los Angeles, the film follows stunt pilot Cliff Secord as he discovers a mysterious jetpack that catapults him into a daring adventure involving Nazis, gangsters and Hollywood intrigue. Despite its charming retro aesthetic, compelling plot and charismatic protagonist performance Billy Campbell, The Rocket Launcher it failed to make a significant impact at the box office and was often overshadowed by other superhero films.
Another one is Black mandirected by Sam Raimi and published in 1990. Protagonist Liam Neeson as the main character, Black man follows the story of Dr. Peyton Westlake, a brilliant scientist who is brutally disfigured and left for dead by a ruthless gangster. Using his scientific expertise and newfound ability to not feel pain, Westlake takes on the identity of Darkman, a vigilante seeking revenge against those who have harmed him. Combining elements of horror, action and tragedy, Black man is a compelling and visually inventive film that was ahead of its time in many ways. Raimi’s kinetic direction, combined with Neeson’s compelling performance, elevates “Darkman” beyond typical superhero films, offering a dark and twisted take on the genre. It’s also one of the most comic book-style movies ever made, and it wasn’t even based on an existing comic book. The film struggled to find an audience upon its initial release, but has since gained a cult following for its bold storytelling and imaginative visuals. This film paved the way for darker and more mature takes on the comics for years to come.
These are just a couple of examples, but now tell us! What do you consider the most underrated comic book movie? Is there a hidden gem that you think deserves more love and attention?
