From Marvel Eternals it wasn’t the most well-received MCU film by critics and fans. It was definitely a big disappointment, but according to one of the film’s stars, Kumail Nanjiani, Marvel Studios fully expected the film to be a huge success, and when that wasn’t the case, when the negative reviews started coming in, it wasn’t easy for the actor. It was really hard for him. He eventually went to therapy for it, and it’s something he says he still has trauma from. Nanjiani shared Michael Rosenbaum’s Podcast Inside You:
“It was really, really hard, because Marvel thought the movie was going to be really, really well-reviewed, so they lifted the embargo really early, and they also got it into some high-end film festivals, and they sent us to a big world tour to promote the film just as the embargo was being lifted, so we had to travel around the world, while they thought we would end up on a rave wave, but that wasn’t true.
He went on to say that he started reading every review and it got out of control:
“I was too aware of it. I read every review, I checked too much, because this thing had become too much in my head… I think there was something strange in the atmosphere as to why that film had been criticized so much, and it didn’t a lot to do with the actual quality of the movie. Anyway, it was really, really hard, and that’s when I thought, ‘This is unfair to me, this is unfair to Emily.’ [V. Gordon, Nanjiani’s wife]I can’t approach my job like this anymore, some things have to change.'”
Nanjiani later said she began therapy following all of this and said:
“I still talk to my therapist about it. Emily says I suffered trauma.”
Eternal currently sits at 47% on Rotten Tomatoes, which at the time was the lowest critics score for the entire MCU. It has since been surpassed Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumaniawho got only 46%.
As a Jack Kirby fan Eternals comics, I was expecting something epic and exciting and a film that told a fantastic and interesting story. But for me, I didn’t like the story the film told and there were too many silly creative choices that just didn’t make sense to me.
Regardless, I think some people can relate to where Nanjiani is from. I know I can!
