Henry Cavill says he doesn’t understand sex scenes and believes they are ‘overused these days’

Henry Cavill he is known for playing some attractive characters, such as the Man of Steel/Superman, Geralt of Rivia, and Detective Argylle in his most recent film. He even threw himself into the ring to be one of the next actors to take on the identity of 007 aka James Bond, a secret agent who has always been known as a sex symbol. But if you ask the actor, he might tell you that he’s not a big fan of sex scenes in his movies and shows.

In a recent interview on Happy Sad Confused podcast with his Argyle director Matthew Vaughnthe actor said that it is often better for a television series or film not to show sex scenes and let the viewer fill in the pieces since “human imagination” is much more powerful.

Cavill said of the sex scenes:

“I don’t understand them, I’m not a fan. There are circumstances where a sex scene is actually beneficial to a film, rather than just the audience, but I think they’re sometimes overused these days. It’s when you have a sense of where you’re going: “Is this really necessary or is this just people with less clothes on?” And that’s when you start to feel more uncomfortable and think, “There’s no show here.” There’s not a piece that will carry forward into the rest of the film.’”

Cavill explained that while there are times when “sex scenes can be great in a movie” and “can really help with the storytelling… Most of the time the human imagination will win out. So, it can be a bit of a cop-out if a TV show or movie is full of flailing bodies and you’re like, ‘Okay, but what does this do other than the idea of, ‘Oh? naked person, fantastic.”‘”

“[I’m] I’m not a fan of doing them,” he reiterated. Luckily for Cavill, there are no sex scenes in Vaughn’s Argyle. I wonder if his stance will influence directors who cast him in leading roles moving forward.
