Last week it was reported that Paramount Pictures was moving forward Top Gun 3. The report says so Tom Cruise is returning to the franchise with Top Gun: nonconformist director Joseph Kosinski. The co-author of Mavericks, Ehren Krugershould write the script and Miles Teller AND Glen Powell they were on board too.
During a recent interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Kosinski was asked about the new film and said he hadn’t officially heard the news that a third Top Gun movie is actually happening, and went on to say he would only return to the franchise . if there was a good enough story or reason. He said:
“I didn’t. I mean, listen: I can’t help myself, as you’re going to sleep at night, the brain dreams. And of course you can’t help but think: if there was another One, what would that story be ? How could we… what’s the emotional reason to bring Maverick back? What’s the challenge? Having done that, how could you push yourself far enough to create a challenge there, to go further. So, obviously, you think about these things. But for me, I have this F1 movie in front of me right now. I’m developing some other things. Tom [Cruise] he’s shooting another mission and maybe going into space. So we all have very ambitious things ahead of us.”
Kosinski went on to say, “It took 36 years for Maverick, it might take 36 years for the next one.” So I guess that means Top Gun 3 might not get made after all! The last report said so Top Gun 3 could be Cruise’s next project after he finishes filming Mission: Impossible 8. But it seems that might not be the case at all, but Powell seems to have a different story.
Powell, who plays Hangman in the series, also talked about a third film and teased that some fun things will be announced. He also says he’s spoken to Kosinski and the rest of the creative team. He says:
“Some fun things will be announced soon… but they were confidential to me. I’ll talk about them [Maverick director Joseph] Kosinski, Cruise and Jerry [Bruckheimer, producer] all time. Things are happening and they look very exciting. I don’t know when I’ll be back… I’m sure there will be a jet waiting for me in the future.”
So he’s saying things are happening! Maybe there is some communication error going on? Maybe Kosinski just isn’t ready to talk about it yet? I have no idea, but now I’m not sure if Top Gun 3 is it really happening or not. If it’s not, I’m totally fine with it. Top Gun: nonconformist it would be a very difficult film to top.
