As people still continue to enjoy Toho’s success Godzilla minus onethe director of the film, Takashi Yamazaki, continues to talk about a possible sequel. During a recent interview, Yamazaki suggested that if he returned to direct a sequel he would introduce another Kaiju for Godzilla to battle.
During an interview with HJ Web, Yamazaki said, “If I were to direct the next Godzilla movie, I’d like to make a sequel to this one. There have been two standalone Godzilla movies in a row, so maybe the next one will do that.” need to include a bad monster.”
The director definitely has a plan for a sequel because he set it up at the end of the first film. The director had previously explained that he had laid the groundwork for a sequel by saying: “Godzilla is both a monster and a god. Godzilla is the Tatari-gami who appears in Princess Mononoke. After all, if you really think about it, isn’t he?” strange that the thing awakened by the American nuclear tests is about to attack Japan? However, if you think of it as the Tatari-gami, it makes sense. A story about everyone working together to quell an attack by the Tatari-gami.”
Tatari-gami means “curse of the gods”, and was the demon featured in Studio Ghibli Princess Mononoke. It is a manifestation of negative energy that causes catastrophes and casts curses. Yamazaki believes these curses have a lot in common with Godzilla.
He explains: “Godzilla was born as a result of an American nuclear test and yet he was created in Japan. Isn’t it incredibly absurd that this would happen? But I think the Japanese feel they have to accept it and consider it a curse.” “Even the Tatari-gami from Princess Mononoke comes to a village with which he has no connection, ruins everything and leaves behind a curse. That’s how I felt after making this film. I felt that making a film about Godzilla was a divine ritual.” The ritual [gathers] the anxieties of the world at that moment and evokes them as a cursed deity that must be appeased.”
Godzilla minus one ends with our main characters reuniting as Koichi learns that Noriko survived a destructive attack by Godzilla. We then learn that there is a hidden black mark on Noriko’s neck, telling us that she has been cursed by the kaiju.
I have no doubt we’ll see a sequel Godzilla minus oneand while it may take a while, I’m excited to see what kind of story it brings.
