It’s been three years since it was announced that the Lizzie McGuire the reboot series would not move forward on Disney+. Hilary Duff had hoped that the series could make a streamer change and move to Hulu before the series was declared dead, but that was not to be and Disney shut it down. The company, which hosted the original series, claimed that the reboot was too adult for their target audience, but the funny part is that the children and teenagers who had been the biggest fans of the original series are now adults, and I think they are. I would have liked a more adult theme.
Jonathan Hurwitzone of the authors of the series, talked about the plot of the show in a series of TikTok, where he explained that the first two episodes of Lizzie McGuire were written and filmed, with the pilot showing Lizzie as an interior designer in New York. After Lizzie’s chef boyfriend cheats on her with her best friend, Lizzie returns home to California, where she reunites with her animated mascot. Episode 2 would have shown a reunion between Lizzie and her childhood friend turned love interest Gordo (Adam Lamberg), which ends with the discovery that he is happily engaged and expecting a child. The episode would have ended with Lizzie receiving a text from her childhood crush, Ethan Craft (Clayton Snyder), with the beginning of episode 3 hinting that they slept together.
Hurwitz revealed:
“Episode 3 wasn’t filmed, but there was a script for it. Lizzie wakes up in Ethan’s bed, in her water polo shirt. Animated Lizzie appears and has this little checklist, like a checklist to do, and Ethan’s on the list and she checks it off. I think she says something like, “I checked that box -dramatic pause- twice.” So, if I had to guess, I saw another comment about some plots [about] because Disney wasn’t comfortable with it, my guess was… that moment was probably one of them.”
It’s a shame that this series wasn’t successful. I think fans of the series would have enjoyed it. Maybe it could still happen one day, but for now you can watch the original series on Disney+.
