The first clip from Mrs. Web has been released and features Dakota JohnsonCassandra “Cassie” Webb saves three future Spider-heroes from the villain Ezekiel. She is able to do this when her psychic powers take over during a subway ride. It’s a pretty uninteresting scene, but it’s what the studio decided to share.
Johnson also appeared in Tonight’s show, where he reiterated that Madame Web is a “stand-alone” film. Sony Pictures obviously wants people to know this.
Beyond that, a look at the film @Cryptic4KQual offered a few more details about what we could expect from the film and whether Spider-Man will be involved. It is explained that Spider-Man is mentioned, but “not in the way you would think.” The scooper then went on to call Sony a “disappointment.”
OH! And as for why Cassie’s mom was researching spiders in the Amazon before she died, she was apparently looking for a cure for a disease called Myasthenia Gravis. This is the same disease that Madame Web suffers from in the comics, which leaves her blind and on a life support machine.
Then there’s the Multiverse’s version of Madame Web. In the film this will be called the “space-time web” and the villain Ezekiel has the power to poison people with his touch.
The film’s synopsis reads: “Separating itself from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the origin story of one of Marvel publishing’s most enigmatic heroines. The suspenseful thriller takes center stage Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a Manhattan paramedic who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to face revelations about her past, she forms relationships with three young women destined for a powerful future…if they can all survive a deadly present.
Madame Web also acts Sydney Sweeney as Julia Carpenter/Spider-Woman, Isabela Mercede in the role of Anya Corazon/Araña, Celeste O’Connor as Mattie Franklin/Spider-Woman,Tahar Rahim in the role of Ezekiel Sims, Emma Roberts, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps (The Upshaws)AND Adam Scott (Separation).
The film was directed by SJ Clarkson (Jessica Jones), and will be released in theaters on February 14th.
