Director Wes Ball’S Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes has gotten a new release date. The film was originally scheduled for release on May 24, 2024 and will now be released on May 10. I’m excited about this movie and it looks like Ball has made a movie that will take audiences on a great adventure.
The next film in the epic saga is set several generations into the future after Caesar’s reign, “where apes are the dominant species and live in harmony and humans are reduced to living in the shadows. As a tyrannical new ape leader builds his empire, a young ape embarks on a harrowing journey that will lead him to question everything he knows about the past and make choices that will define a future for both apes and humans.
It was revealed that the film will be a cross between the Caesar trilogy and the timeline of the original Planet of the Apes films. During a previous interview with the director, he also talked about the adventure aspect of the film and how he wished his film had a bit of Star Wars and a younger spirit. He explained:
“When I started working on it, I said, ‘I feel like Apes needs a little Star Wars.’ It’s all still very much grounded in reality, but it’s essentially a quest narrative. Our main character is the young and impressionable Noa [Owen Teague] – meets characters along the way and awakens when he finds himself in a place that will test him, and ultimately becomes his true self. We didn’t make fun of it, or Disneyfied it, if I may say so! But we brought a younger spirit.”
Speaking about the film’s setting, Ball shared:
“I wanted to take a big leap forward in time. It’s quite telling that Caesar is still a spirit in the film, but most of his living relatives are not in this picture. If the last three films were about the Stone Age, here we can see what happens when they enter the Bronze Age.”
In the film, “Some groups have never heard of Caesar, while others have distorted his teachings to build thriving empires. In this setting, an ape leader begins enslaving other groups to find human technology, while another ape, who has seen his clan being taken, embarks on a journey to find freedom. A young human woman becomes the key to the latter’s quest, even though she has plans of her own.”
Producer Joe Hartwick previously mentioned, the main goal of this project is to make a film that is a little more fun and adventurous than the other films in the saga:
“The last two movies were about Caesar’s burden. Just like The Dark Knight, they felt heavy: super fun, but super intense. We’re going in a different direction. Noa still has a burden, but it’s wrapped up in a different way.” adventure level, especially since the character has never been exposed to the outside world before. So we see him seeing the world for the first time.”
The cast includes Owen Teague (It), Freya Allen (The witcher), AND Peter Macon (The Orville). The film’s screenplay comes from Josh Friedman (War of the Worlds), Rick Jaffa AND Amanda Silver (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), AND Patrick Aison (Prey). She is also a co-star Travis Jeffrey (Uninterrupted), Neil Sandilands (Sweetness), Sara Wisemann (One of us is lying), Ras-Samuel Welda’abzgi (The clearing), Lydia Peckham (Cowboy bebop), AND Kevin Durand.
The film will be released in theaters on May 10, 2024.
