The recently released horror thriller Night swim was inspired by a 2014 short film of the same name created by Rod Blackhurst AND Bryce McGuire. This short film is now online for all of you to watch. It’s a decent little short film and you can see why it was picked up for a feature film.
Unfortunately, the feature film wasn’t very good. There were so many other directions they could have taken the story, but in the end it ended up becoming a cliché and predictable horror film, which is a shame.
During an interview with Bloody-Disgusting, McGuire spoke about the short film’s inspiration, saying, “The short film was really just me and Rod Blackhurst hanging out at the pool one night and saying, ‘Remember when you were a kid, and you had did you freak out because you couldn’t see the bottom anymore?’ And you thought there was something underneath you. It was like, ‘Yeah, I still feel it.’ Then, ‘Let’s see if we can capture it in a short amount of time, in a short format.’”
The short stars Megalyn Echikun woke up (Emily the criminal, Damien) as Eva, “a woman who finds herself haunted by a dark presence when she decides to go for a leisurely nighttime swim”.
The short doesn’t dive into any mythology or explanation, but it builds some good creepy tension and delivers some fun scares. It’s nice that they managed to turn it into a feature film, but the story and script could have been much better and more interesting.
Watch the short film and tell us what you think.
