Dynamite Entertainment has released a collection of variant covers for its upcoming episode ThunderCats comic number 1. Dynamite also confirmed that the first issue has over 100,000 copies ordered before the final order closing (FOC) date, which is pretty impressive.
Dynamite CEO Nick Barrucci said in a statement: “It’s incredibly gratifying that fans and retailers have supported this so well.” He also pointed out how unusual it is for a comic to sell so well at the beginning of the year: “January and February didn’t have as many strong launches, and that’s why, in our optimism that this series would be successful, we launched in February instead of pushing it towards the end of the sprint/early summer.”
The new ThunderCats comic is a reboot of the original 1985 animated series. The series “aims to be a refreshing yet timeless take on classic myths and characters, taking advantage of Shalvey’s ability to weave together complex narratives alongside Moss’ striking imagery . The initial storyline is currently planned to delve into the early days on Third Earth, the world the ThunderCats are forced to survive in after escaping their original home. Partly an origins approach, the title will explore untold stories and new challenges for Lion-O, Cheetara and the rest of the group.
The description reads: “Flighting through space to escape their dying homeworld, the ThunderCats were attacked along the way by their mortal enemies, the Mutants of Plun-Darr. After hijacking their damaged flagship to a planet called Third Earth, the surviving ThunderCats now strive to rebuild their society in harmony with the natives of the new world. But the Mutants, determined to take possession of the ThunderCats’ mystical gem, the Eye of Thundera, have tracked them down and have also formed an alliance with Mumm-Ra, the devil-priest of Third Earth!”
Now the ThunderCats, “led by an inexperienced Lion-O, must unite like never before to protect their legacy from this combined foe. But will they be able to withstand the onslaught of Mumm-Ra the Ever-Living once he sets his sights on them?”
The comic was developed by writer Declan Shalvey and artist Drew Moss. Barrucci continued, “Writer Declan Shalvey, artist Drew Moss, and the rest of the creative team have put together something special for both longtime and new fans of the ThunderCats franchise,”
The creative team includes covers created by David Nakayama, Lucio Parrillo, Jae LeeAND Ivan Tao. Take a look at ThunderCats Issue 1 covers below:
