HBO has released the first trailer for Tokyo Vice Season 2, which sees the return of Ansel Elgort as Jake Adelstein. I thought the first season of this detective series was fantastic, and I couldn’t wait to see the exciting story continue to unfold in the second season, especially after the wild cliffhanger of the first season.
The series is based on Jake Adelstein’s book of the same name, and the story is set in 1999. It follows a fictionalized version of Adelstein, “an American-born journalist now working at the Japanese capital’s main newspaper at a time when the criminal Yakuza exercised a powerful influence on society.”
In the first season of the series, Adelstein formed bonds with detective Hiroto Katagiri (Ken Watanabe), “who believes in maintaining a delicate balance between the different factions of the Yakuza, and Samantha Porter (Rachel Keller), another American expatriate who works as a hostess at a club.” The season ended with Adelstein finding video evidence of powerful Japanese men raping Samantha’s fellow hostess and taking it to Katagiri.
Season two will see Adelstein continue to dive deeper into Tokyo’s criminal economies. When you talk about the next season, creator JT Rogers said: “One of the drivers of the series is to see what happens when you’re young and ambitious and incredibly talented, and you go after what you want and start getting it. What does it mean? Heavy is the crown, says the proverb. All of these characters are grasping for the brass ring, but then, because of the world that the show is set in, the danger and violence increases exponentially. What they’re learning is, ‘When my back is against the wall, what’s the least bad decision I can make?'”
One of the new characters that the second season will introduce us is Shoko Nagata (Miki Maya) and Naoki Hayama (Yosuke Kubozuka). “Nagata is a detective from Japan’s national police agency who comes to town with the intention of taking a much more aggressive attitude towards the Yakuza than Katagiri’s philosophy of balance, while Hayama has a more dangerous criminal flavour.”
Sarah Aubreyhead of original content at HBO Max, previously said: “We couldn’t be more excited to give the show’s passionate fans another season to continue this intriguing and suspenseful crime story set in one of the most vibrant and beautiful cities in the world”. .”
Creator of the series JT Rogers added, “Writing and then making the first season of ‘Tokyo Vice’ with this extraordinary group of artists was an unparalleled experience. So I’m over the moon that we can move forward. I can’t wait to get back to work in Tokyo with our brilliant cast and crew. Stay tuned: there will be twists and turns in the story to come!”
Tokyo Vice Season two will premiere on Max in February 2024.
