When you think of the character of Harley Quinn, you might think of the actress Margot Robbiewho has played the demented villain formerly known as Dr. Harleen Quinzel in three films over the past 8 years, including Suicide squad, Birds of preyAND The suicide squad. The two-time Oscar-nominated star of Barbie is now passing the baton, as the Joker the sequel will introduce the character Harley Quinn.
Joker: Folie a Deux will be released in theaters this fall and will be featured Joaquin Phoenix returning to the role of Arthur Fleck, opposite Lady Gaga as Dr. Harleen Quinzel.
Robbie was asked if she would pass on the role while on the red carpet at this weekend’s Golden Globes, where Variety asked her if she had reached out to Lady Gaga and what she thought the portrayal would be like. She replied:
“He’ll crush him! It will be fantastic. I actually didn’t talk to her about this. I almost don’t want to know, so I can keep it as a surprise when I see the movie.
Robbie previously told Variety that she’s excited for another actor to put her stamp on Harley Quinn and that she doesn’t feel possessive about taking on the superhero role.
“I always wanted Harley to be a character that would be passed on to other actresses to play, just as there are so many iconic male characters. This has always been her dream. Harley is so much fun and can go in so many different directions. You put her in someone else’s hands, and it’s like, ‘What are they going to do with her?’ The options are endless.”
I know I might be in the minority, but I didn’t love the first Joker movie, so I don’t have high hopes for the second one. I like Lady Gaga as an actress though, and I think she could make this performance really fun and wild.
Warner Bros. will release the film theatrically on October 4, 2024.
