EXCLUSIVE: Devo will be coming to the Sundance Film Festival in more ways than one.
Just one day after the Chris Smith-directed documentary about the new wave band makes its SFF debut in Park City on Jan. 21, Devo will take the stage at the newly opened Marquis on Main Street in the upscale ski town that I already experienced.
Tickets for the performance are $50 each for general admission and $150 for VIP and should be on sale now. As Dave Grohl and Nick Cave will tell you, Sundance has long been a magnet for big bands and artists to have films about their careers at the festival, so much so that the Devo show has been making the rounds since the SFF lineup was announced is on December 6th maybe.
Commemorating the band’s 50th anniversary last year, Paul Oakenfold’s opening performance is something of a return to old ground for the Whip It boys. Devo closed the 1996 Sundance Film Festival. Dressed in striped prison jumpsuits and the group’s signature red energy dome hats, the performance went down in history and was even publicized as Butch Devo and the Sundance gig own video.
Formed in 1973 by Kent State students Mark Mothersbaugh, Gerald Casale and Bob Lewis, Devo challenged the concept of a band, a show and who the audience was. With this in mind, the band was introduced by David Bowie and Neil Young and excited many more people with their very special cover of the 1977 Rolling Stones classic “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction”, on which they played . Saturday Night Live Next year. Devo reached the Top 40 in 1980 with her own classic, “Whip It.” Freedom of choice Album.
Although Mothersbaugh became the music behind a number of Wes Anderson films, including Pee-wee’s playhouse And Backbonesplus a breakup with your loved one Yo Gabba GabbaThe group has occasionally toured through various incarnations to this day.
This year, DEVO joins documentaries about other music legends such as Brian Eno and Luther Vandross. The DEVO documentary was screened five times at SFF, including Jan. 26 and 28 in Salt Lake City.
DEVO is a Library Films/VICE STUDIOS production in association with Mutato Entertainment, presented by BMG, Undeniable (a Fremantle label) and Warner Music Group. Cinetic is distributing the film and Smith is managing director.
The 2024 Sundance Film Festival takes place from January 18 to 28.
