John Williams is behind some of the most special and captivating film music of all time, creating soundtracks for Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Superman, Jaws, ET, Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List, TO THE, Harry Potter, and much more. As he approaches his 92nd birthday next month, the composer sees no reason to give up another job should the opportunity arise for a big project.
Two years ago, while putting the finishing touches on the final score Indiana Jones film, said the project could be his last. But since then, Williams has revealed he sees no reason not to continue working if the right job comes along.
In a recent interview with the Sunday Times, Williams explained:
“If a film came along that really interested me, with a schedule that I could stick to, I wouldn’t want to rule anything out. Everything is possible. Everything is in front of us. Only our limitations hold us back. Or, to put it more simply: I like to keep the open mind.”
He went on to talk about how attitudes towards film composition have changed over the course of his career, saying:
“Thirty or forty years ago, when I brought a film music program to one of our great orchestras, perhaps there was condescension. I get it; I understand the value of things made in the commercial world and their place in the world of art. But things are different now. I would like to come back in 50 years and see how cinema is contributing to the development of new music, because I think young composers will want to work on both fronts.”
He has seen the landscape of film and music change greatly over the course of his career. It truly is a wealth of knowledge. I wish he could somehow see the next 50 years and even realize the impact of him during that time. But the good news is that we might see a few more movies with a John Williams score, and that’s a gift.
