Zack Snyder Says He’s Tired of Superhero Movies and ‘Not Knocking on James Gunn’s Door’

Man of Steel AND Batman vs. Superman director Zack Snyder has once again expressed his thoughts on superhero movie fatigue and says you won’t find him asking James Gunn to direct one of those DC movies.

The superhero movie genre is not in a good place right now. Marvel Studios had something figured out at one point, but after wrapping up The Infinity Saga, things got away from them. Most fans blame quantity over quality. The narrative, writing, filmmaking and visual effects suffered.

Both Marvel and DC have had disappointing results at the box office this year, which is proof that audiences are tired of seeing the same old comic book movie formula over and over again. Nobody thinks outside the box anymore.

The Atlantic recently published a new piece on director Zack Snyder, and the controversial director was asked about the current state of the superhero genre. In response to this question, he said: “I have the same tiredness” and described these comic book films as “a dead end”, that they are no longer capable of telling self-contained stories. “Nobody thinks they’re going to go see a one-off superhero movie.”

There’s nothing wrong with making a unique superhero movie! But nowadays everything has to be connected to this huge cinematic universe! Todd Philips’ The joker came out and it was an independent film that was a huge success. It was because it was unique, the film did something very different and the audience wanted something like that to come. They still do it!

Snyder went on to say that he has no plans to make a superhero movie anytime soon, saying, “I’m not going to be knocking on James Gunn’s door, saying, ‘Brother, make me one of those lovable movies.’ The Holy Grail is an original IP that you create that resonates and is beautiful.

That’s one thing I appreciate about Snyder, the fact that he creates original content based on his ideas. Even if you don’t like what he’s doing, you have to give him credit for doing it. I always talk about wanting to see filmmakers and studios commit to making original content, so what Snyder is doing with his current work is really interesting. He’s building off the original IP, while everyone else is rebooting and doing the same thing over and over again with the same characters.
