There was a part of me that wondered if Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom it might actually have a decent opening at the box office. After all, it came out over the holidays and theater earnings are poor at the moment. But no… DC Aquaman the sequel ended up having the low box office opening we all expected. It’s one of the worst DCEU debuts ever.
Aquaman officially closed out the DCEU with a $27.6 million opening weekend, making it one of the brand’s worst debuts. Over the four-day holiday weekend, theAquaman the sequel grossed a disappointing $40 million domestically.
As for the international box office, it opened to $80 million, bringing the global total to $120 million, which puts the film on the same level as Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, The Flash, and The Marvels.
The first Aquaman film grossed over $1.1 billion, so the studio initially had high hopes for the sequel when they started working on it. But the superhero movie landscape has changed so much between the release of Aquaman and its sequel, and the DC film franchise is now in the midst of an overhaul with James Gunn and Peter Safran leading the charge.
I haven’t had a chance to see Aquaman, but some of my friends have seen it and told me it’s not as bad as some reviews say it is. I’ll probably end up watching it this week.
Have you seen Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom yet? If so, let us know what you think!
