Zack Snyder doesn’t let go of his 2011 action film sucker Punch. There has been a lot of talk about it lately and how it is a misunderstood film of “pure satire”. He has also talked about making an extended director’s cut of the film and it appears that this is something he is actively pursuing.
This is not just a recut of his original film with the inclusion of deleted scenes. Snyder wants to reunite the original cast to shoot all new footage! Snyder talked about his sucker Punch plans in an interview with Inverse and explained that he is currently working with Warner Bros. to make it happen.
Even though the film already received an extended release, with this release, they would go back and reshoot the ending with the original cast and restore the film’s “super controversial” form. He explained:
“I’m working with Warner Bros. to try to find a window to go back in. Even though we made an extended cut, it’s not the fully realized movie.”
As for reuniting the cast to help make his plan a reality, he said:
“I think it’s good [if] I can call those guys, Emily [Browning] and Abby [Cornish] and the crew returns. Some shots would be great.”
It will be interesting to see if Snyder can actually pull this off. I’d be curious to see what his original vision for the film was, with a completely different ending. Speaking previously about the finale, Snyder said:
“I never got to do the Director’s Cut. I still plan to do it sometime. But in the original ending, when Babydoll is in the chair in the basement with Blue – she’s already been lobotomized – when the cop shines the light on her, the set breaks down and she gets up and sings a song on stage.”
The film ends with a lobotomy, but implies that Babydoll also received justice for the abuse she suffered from her stepfather. Snyder went on to say that the studios thought the original ending was too strange:
“It’s strangely not upbeat and upbeat at the same time. That’s pretty much the tone it had at the end. We tested it and the studio thought it was too weird, so we changed it. You’ll see it sooner or later. , I’m sure of it. I hope so.”
Speaking about the Director’s Cut of the film, Snyder explained: “I think the Director’s Cut has a little more sci-fi and deconstructive elements to it. Because for me, one of the things that I was dealing with, kind of conceptually, when I thought about it, was a way to have the irony of something like heavy metal, something super violent, super sexual, super visually gigantic in a movie where it has nothing to do with a movie like this.
He added: “It costs a lot of money and it’s like real, legitimate production value and it’s crazy. Normally, those two things don’t go very well together, because these things have a lot of commercial appeal. So if you do too niche… No, but you know what I mean? It allowed me to do both… so when you see the Director’s Cut, you see something much stranger, more personal and bizarre.”
sucker Punch follows a young woman named Babydoll who is institutionalized by her abusive stepfather after her sister’s death. While she is locked up in a mental institution, she retreats into an imaginative and fantastic world to escape her sad reality. In this alternate reality, Babydoll and four other patients become warriors who must retrieve five objects to help them free themselves before Babydoll is lobotomized.
