New details on the TWISTER sequel that will not continue the story of the original film

The classic 1996 tornado disaster movie Twist is getting a titled sequel Twister which is directed by Lee Isaac Chung (Minari) and the screenwriter of the film, Mark L. Smithtalked about the film and what fans can expect from it.

One thing the writer revealed is that the sequel won’t continue the story of the original film, but he said it will be a wild ride. During an interview with Collider, Smith shared:

“Is very funny. [Director Lee Isaac Chung] he did a little bit of his own work on the script because that’s what they do, so I don’t know exactly some of the changes. So I don’t know the details, but that’s a separate story. It is not a continuation of the original. But it’s just a really wild ride with some good, fun characters. Hopefully we can draw on what the original had because that thing is just iconic. But it’s great to have a director like Isaac take on something like that. It’s just out of character for him and I think he’s enjoying it. I was texting him a couple days ago, and it’s all crazy.”

The film was originally announced as a remake and a couple of years later it was declared a sequel by Universal Pictures describing it as “a new chapter of the 1996 film”. Smith went on to say:

“I talked to a lot of storm experts, tornado experts, storm chasers, and I shot with some. Even tornado season itself, due to climate change, what used to be tornado alley ran through a certain stretch. Now it extends much farther east, and it’s moving, and the dates are wider, and the numbers are higher, and the storms themselves are more severe. So we used some elements of it just to also shed light on the causes and effects of climate change.”

It was previously reported that the studio was hoping to bring Helen Hunt back and tell a story centered around the daughter her character had with Bill Paxton’s character. It was explained to her that she contracted the storm-chasing bug that her parents had. I have no idea if this is still the plan of the story or not. Hunt, however, was not listed in the cast.

Movie stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, Antonio Ramos, Brandon Perea, Daryl McCormack, Maura Tierney, Harry Hadden-Paton, Sasha Lane, Kieran Shipka, Nik Dodani, David Corenswet, Tunde AdebimpeAND Katy O’Brian.

The original film follows a group of storm chasers who are trying to use a revolutionary new weather tool that can track and predict tornadoes. Along the way, they encounter a series of dangerous tornadoes, which put their lives in danger as they race to collect valuable data and save lives.

Twisters is scheduled for release in the United States on July 19, 2024.
