Jonathan Majors fired from Marvel Studios following guilty verdict

In a not-so-shocking turn of events, Marvel Studios has fired Jonathan Majors, who played MCU mega-villain Kang the Conqueror. The decision comes after Majors’ recent guilty verdict in a domestic violence trial in which he was charged with reckless assault and harassment.

We all saw it coming, but I guess Marvel was still waiting for the verdict before officially announcing their decision.

Majors first debuted as Kang in Loki season premiere in 2021, and has been a significant presence in the MCU as it was being built up as the big bad bad during Phase 6.

It also played a central role Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and the second season of Lokiwhere we last saw him. In addition to his contributions to Marvel, Majors has found success with Amazon MGM Creed III.

A representative for Marvel Studios confirmed the studio’s decision to part ways with Majors, citing the recent verdict as the main reason. This development raises questions about Kang the Conqueror’s future in the MCU, especially considering the character’s prominence in Phases 5 and 6, including a dedicated film, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.

Either Marvel will recast the character and move forward with their original plan, or they will restructure things and create a new villain to focus on. With the way the Multiverse is set up, anything is possible! Marvel is no stranger to recasting roles, so this is a real possibility.

When it comes to The Kang Dynasty, Destin Daniel Cretton From Shang Chi step down as director due to commitments to other Marvel projects. Michele Waldronthe showrunner of Loki first season, was recently brought on to write for The Kang Dynasty and the Phase 6 finale Avengers: Secret Warssignaling a new direction for these projects in the current situation.

The finale of the second season of Loki left Kang’s fate ambiguous, which could provide narrative flexibility for the studio in dealing with this casting shake-up. Marvel Studios, known for its meticulous planning and fan-centric storytelling, is undoubtedly evaluating the best course of action to handle this unexpected change while maintaining the integrity of the MCU’s expansive and interconnected narrative.

What do you think Marvel will do? What would you like to see Marvel do?
